Step by step: Convert HEIC to WebP on iPhone
- 1
Open this page in Safari (or Chrome) on your iPhone or iPad.
- 2
Tap the box above. Choose Photo Library to pick from Photos, or Choose File to browse the Files app (iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, Downloads).
- 3
The WebP is made as soon as the file is added. Adjust Quality if you want a smaller file.
- 4
Tap Download. Safari saves the file to Files › Downloads (tap the download arrow in the address bar to find it). To add an image to Photos, open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Image.
What changes when you convert HEIC to WebP
- WebP is lossy. The Quality slider starts at 90%, which looks the same as the original for nearly every photo; lower it for a smaller file and the preview shows the new size before you download.
- Check that wherever you're uploading accepts WebP – most websites and browsers do, but some older apps and forms don't.
- Photos keep their full resolution, and the WebP opens on Windows, Android and every website.
About HEIC and WebP
- HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads save photos in by default. It stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality, but many Windows PCs, websites, upload forms and older apps can't open it.
- WebP is Google's image format for websites. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and is usually 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG – but some editing apps, older software and upload forms still reject it.
Tips for iPhone
- Want future photos as JPG? Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible makes the camera save JPG instead of HEIC (files get about twice as big).
- When you pick from Photo Library, iOS sometimes hands over an already-converted JPG. If you need the original file, save it to Files first and use Choose File.
- There's no app to install from the App Store – the tool runs inside Safari, and the file never leaves your iPhone.
HEIC vs WebP
| HEIC | WebP | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (HEVC), very efficient | Lossy or lossless |
| Transparency | Supported, but camera photos don't use it | Yes |
| Animation | Live Photos and bursts can hold several images | Yes |
| Best for | Saving storage on iPhone and iPad | Fast-loading images on websites |
| Support | Apple devices; limited on Windows, Android and the web | All modern browsers; patchy in older desktop apps |
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose quality converting HEIC to WebP?
At the default 90% quality the difference is practically invisible. WebP is lossy, so very low quality settings will show blur or blocky edges.
Can I convert several HEIC files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; each converts on its own, and Download all saves them in one ZIP.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using your device's own processor, so your photos never leave your device. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.
Where does the converted file go on my iPhone?
Tap Download. Safari saves the file to Files › Downloads (tap the download arrow in the address bar to find it). To add an image to Photos, open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Image.
